HYPOSTILA SYSTEM

Designed in 1979 by Oscar Tusquets and Lluís Clotet, the Hypostila system answers the question: how to build a shelving system that supports heavy loads without depending on a wall. Developed alongside civil engineer Jesús Jiménez, vertical aluminium columns carry the weight straight to the floor, freeing the wall from bearing the load. Standard configurations or made to measure, Hypostila reshapes itself to the project rather than the other way around. Almost fifty years on, it’s as adaptable to today’s spaces as it was in 1979. The result reads more like architecture than furniture, a structure that stays visually light while holding serious weight.
